Promotion of food delivery in Facebook Ads: advertising result in 6 months with ROAS of 4787%

In this case study, we will consider cooperation with a client with whom we had previously worked before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022. The client suspended its operations on March 1, 2022, but decided to resume them at the end of December 2022. In connection with the start of the delivery service, he contacted us again, and we started an advertising campaign in early January 2023.

Food delivery

Our task was to attract new customers and remind them of the start of work for the segment of past customers.

The task

Client: food delivery service
Objective: Drive traffic to the website and mobile app for the purpose of purchase. Attracting new customers to make a purchase in an online restaurant.
Traffic source: Facebook ads
Duration: 6 months

The following audience segments were selected for the task in order to achieve successful results:

Segment 1
Cold audience: This segment is divided into subgroups, such as IT, food delivery, and all others. To attract new customers, we launched advertising campaigns targeting these subgroups.

Segment 2
Warm audience: This segment included people who had previously interacted with an Instagram profile, Facebook page, visited a website, or installed an app, but had not made a purchase. For this audience, we ran ads to attract them to the sales funnel.

Segment 3
Hot audience: This segment consisted of customers who had previously made a purchase. We paid special attention to this segment, stimulating them with additional offers and reminders of unfinished orders.

Work progress

Market and competitor analysis

We analyzed the current situation on the food delivery market in Odesa, identified the main competing brands and their approaches to promotion. We studied audience behavior in the post-quarantine period and changes in preferences.

Identifying the target audience

We divided the audience into three segments: cold, warm, and hot audiences. Cold audience: people who have not interacted with the brand before. Warm audience: users who have previously interacted with the profile on Instagram, Facebook, visited the website or installed the app, but did not make a purchase. Hot audience: customers who have already made purchases.

Launching a campaign with a warm audience

In January 2023, we started with targeted advertising for a warm audience, keeping in touch with users who were already familiar with the brand. We created creatives with an emphasis on reminding users about the resumption of the delivery service and special offers.

Work with unfinished purchases

In February, we started targeting users who hadn't completed their orders, showing them ads with reminders and additional incentives to complete their purchases.

Expand your audience and scale your advertising

In March, after successful work with the warm audience, we launched campaigns for the cold audience, dividing it into subgroups based on interests (IT, food delivery, etc.). We targeted new segments, keeping the proven creatives and testing their effectiveness on a new audience.

Branding and strengthening communication

In April, we added branded elements to creatives, strengthening brand awareness among current customers. We created special offers, tying them to calendar holidays (for example, Easter), which drew additional attention to the brand.

Optimization and support of the sales funnel

In May and June, we focused on maintaining the sales funnel and creating new creatives to keep the audience interested. We simplified communication and focused on key offers, which contributed to an increase in conversions and a decrease in the cost of purchase.

We tracked the results of advertising campaigns on a weekly basis, analyzing CTR, cost per click, conversions, and other key indicators. Made adjustments to strategies based on the data obtained, maintaining high efficiency of campaigns. We made changes to communication and strategies due to changes in the needs and behavior of the audience during the crisis. Actively promoted the brand as a socially responsible business that supports the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which strengthened audience loyalty.

Work on promoting food delivery

We developed several strategies to improve the results of the restaurant’s advertising campaigns, which consisted of the following stages:

Stage 1: Advertising to a warm audience
Initially, we focused on advertising to a warm audience, i.e. those who had already had contact with the client’s restaurant. The campaign lasted for 2 months. This allowed us to maintain and improve our relationship with this audience, keeping them as regular customers.

Over time, they began to attract the attention of those who did not complete the order. We used advertising to encourage them to return and complete the purchase process:

Stage 2: Additional targeting
3 months of running – during this period, we launched additional advertising campaigns, but kept the same banner, changing only the text. This allowed us to effectively attract the attention of new customers from a cold audience using a previously tested creative.

Stage 3: Expanding advertising
At the end of the 3rd month, we added branded banners to the warm audience creatives that were about expanding delivery services. This further strengthened brand perception among regular customers.

Stage 4: Scaling the targeting
At the end of the 4th month, we began to expand targeted advertising by updating creatives. We continued to work with the warm audience, but also addressed new segments of this audience. For example, we created offers for customers who had shown interest or were in the process of placing an order but had not completed it. The banners also showed how the company helps the Armed Forces.

Stage 5: Change of communication and branded sleeve
For the third audience, who had already made a purchase, we created additional creatives, such as a special offer for Lent and Easter (for 3 months of running). We also actively engaged them in repeat purchases and encouraged them to complete the order.

In June, when the situation began to stabilize, we changed our approach to communicating with the audience and focused on the products and emphasized the restaurant’s brand. During this period, we built a stable system that remains unchanged. We also continued to work with all three audience segments.

In addition, we started to launch a branded arm to attract customers to the sales funnel. We had already built an automated funnel that increased the reach of the cold audience and attracted those who interacted with ads but did not complete the order. Therefore, the main work was to maintain this funnel and constantly create new creatives.
