Promotion of an eSports team on YouTube: 500,000 views and 24.5 thousand subscribers in 10 months of work

In March 2024, we were approached professional eSports organization with a serious problem - despite their success at tournaments, their YouTube channel was not bringing in any views, income, or new fans. The team had been around for a few years and had some achievements in the competitive scene, but their presence in the media space left much to be desired. They were unable to convert their sporting results into media success and a loyal audience.

Organic traffic
The main traffic came organically - mostly from the YouTube Shorts feed

The main problems the client faced were:

  • Complete lack of understanding of your target audience
  • A haphazard approach to content creation – “random releases” without a single concept
  • Unattractive and monotonous video format (mostly vlogs)
  • Lack of entertainment and unique presentation
  • Failure to create and maintain an active community around the team
  • The content was limited to simple gameplay recordings with no added value.

Channel state at start:

  • 200-300 views per day
  • 5-10 new subscribers daily
  • Lack of system in content
  • Monotonous vlogs without a concept

Period before working with us:

In essence, the channel worked “for show” – the team regularly published materials, but these efforts did not bring significant results either for audience growth, or for strengthening the brand, or for attracting sponsors.

We were faced with a difficult but interesting task: to completely rethink the content strategy and turn a faceless channel into a powerful tool for building a fan base and an additional source of income for the organization.

Task

Client: Professional eSports team (under NDA)

Term of work: 10 months (01.01.2024 – 20.10.2024)

Main goals:

  • Create an active community around the team
  • Turn your channel into a recognizable brand
  • Significantly increase the number of views and subscribers
  • Develop a sustainable content strategy

A niche: eSports (highly competitive environment with a content-spoiled audience)

Target audience: youth 14-25 years old

  • Active gamers and eSports enthusiasts
  • Fans of the competitive scene

Project Feature: it was necessary to completely rethink the approach to content, transforming the channel from a formal addition to eSports activities into an independent media asset capable of attracting an audience regardless of the team’s athletic results.

Working on the project

Step 1: Strategic Analysis and New Concept Development

After deep research into the eSports niche, we developed a fundamentally new content strategy:

  • Rethinking the approach to the audience — began to create content not only for the team’s fans, but also for everyone interested in eSports
  • Implemented the Hub-Help-Hero structure to diversify content:
    • Hub – regular entertaining content to build a community
    • Help –  training materials for aspiring cyber athletes
    • Hero – large formats and special projects to attract new audiences
  • Created a direct connection with the audience — launched formats where viewers could send their videos for evaluation by professionals
  • Focused on engagement, rather than sports results – people began to watch the channel regardless of the team’s victories or losses

Step 2: Implementing new formats

We have completely redesigned the content grid, adding a variety of formats:

Long videos:

  • In-depth interviews with players to reveal their personalities
  • Educational materials for playing at a professional level
  • Highlights from major tournaments
  • User Video Rating (became a channel hit)
  • 1:1 format with analysis of game situations
  • Best Players of All Time Ratings

Short videos:

  • Bright gaming moments
  • Team reactions to interesting events
  • Funny situations from the lives of players
  • Excerpts from interviews with unexpected answers

Interactive elements:

  • Content requests from subscribers
  • User Video Rating
  • Answers to Fan Questions
  • Engaging the audience in voting and discussions

Step 3: Technical Optimization

In addition to the content, we have significantly improved the technical side of the channel:

  • Reworked the visual style of the covers to increase CTR
  • Optimized headings taking into account search queries and trends
  • Created a system of “evergreen content”(evergreen content), which remains relevant for a long time
  • Adapted short videos under the recommendation algorithms in Shorts

Peculiarities of working with a cybersport project

Working with an eSports team had its specifics:

  • The need for deep immersion in the youth audience – understanding their interests, language, and trends
  • Difficulty coordinating with busy players – limited team time for filming due to tight training and tournament schedule
  • Balance between sports and entertainment content – creating content that is interesting even to those who do not follow the professional scene

Key insight of the project: The success of an eSports channel lies not in focusing on sporting achievements, but in creating a unique media environment around a team that is interesting to the audience in its own right.
